Long-term Jeonse tenants facing eviction due to the expiration of their 20-year contracts are refusing to leave, claiming, "We are victims too." A representative of the tenant group stated, "There was a vague expectation that the government would take some kind of action after 20 years."
Lee Kwang-hoon, chairman of the Seoul Metropolitan Government Public Rental Housing Tenant Rights Promotion Committee, appeared on SBS 'News Hunters' twice on the 12th and 18th, arguing, "In principle, it is correct that we should leave according to the contract terms since we lived comfortably. However, we are also victims."
He emphasized, "When we moved in in 2007, tenants had various options. Even though there were opportunities to buy homes at that time, we gave them all up to move here. Those who received public sale apartments have become multi-billion won asset holders, haven't they? We were in the same position, but now apartment prices have risen to a level where we couldn't afford them even if we were reborn."
He continued, "In 2007, mortgage loans were easily available. Personally, I think I wasn't bold enough and lacked the courage. Paying interest on a mortgage felt somewhat burdensome."
When asked, "Shouldn't opportunities be given to the next generation?", he replied, "Isn't it said that excess tax revenue will increase by 100 trillion won? I think this is a golden opportunity. The government should buy houses and provide them to young people with ease. I suggest they invest a portion of the excess tax revenue boldly."
