Do students these days not get forced to study?

‌Back when I was in high school,
they forced us to do night self-study,
and we had pop quizzes where if you scored below a certain point, you'd get hit with a cane.
Because of that,
I studied just to avoid getting hit.
Is that kind of thing gone these days?
Does that mean if they don't want to study, they can just not study and no one says anything??
