Is it common for people born in '73 to be grandparents?

‌My mother was born in '73,
and I am 21 years old.
Among my mother's friends,
two of them already have grandchildren.
I only know of those two, but there might be more.
Is '73 typically the age when people start being called grandma or grandpa??
It's quite surprising.
