I still cannot understand how missing persons cases are being handled

‌Fine, I get what you're saying—there are many prank reports and most missing adults return on their own.
Even if I concede that point a hundred times over,
what is the benefit of closing a case just because someone claims they finally got in touch with a missing person they hadn't been able to contact?
Is it simply because they don't want to go through the procedures and find it too bothersome???
