According to a Yonhap News report on the 26th, the Ministry of Education requested that a candidate university be recommended to the Jeonnam-Gwangju Integrated Special City by the 30th.
The Jeonnam-Gwangju Special City is expected to review applications from both Mokpo National University and Sunchon National University and select one final candidate.
Despite pursuing integration to establish a new medical school, the two universities have failed to reach an agreement on the location, ultimately resulting in them competing independently.
In relation to the national task of "promoting the establishment of medical schools in regions without them," the Ministry of Education selected Gyeongbuk and Jeonnam-Gwangju (formerly Jeonnam) as candidate sites for the 100-student quota proposed for regional medical schools in 2030, and requested that both regions submit plans by the 20th.
Gyeongbuk Province submitted a plan to establish a medical school at the national Gyeongguk National University, but Jeonnam-Gwangju City submitted an "opinion statement" containing general information, such as the necessity of establishing a medical school without a specific location, due to the breakdown of negotiations between the two universities.
As a result, while the atmosphere suggested that the establishment of a medical school in Gyeongbuk was highly likely, observations have emerged that the remaining quota might be allocated to Jeonnam-Gwangju, as Gyeongguk National University is known to have applied for a medical school quota of 50 students.
