This system was originally introduced during the Chun Doo-hwan administration as compensation for athletes who were forced to focus solely on sports instead of studying since elementary school in preparation for the Asian Games and Olympics; it was meant to make up for the 30-36 month military service period at the time. However, now that military service is only 18 months and the elite sports system has been abolished—making it difficult to pursue higher education or get scouted—there is no reason to maintain this benefit.
