"Anyone who is not a Marxist in their youth lacks a heart, and anyone who remains a Marxist in their old age lacks a head." — Philosopher Karl Popper
This passage is used to mean that being fascinated by Marxism in one's youth—outraged by social inequality and dreaming of ideal equality—stems from human empathy (having a heart); however, continuing to believe blindly even after rationally realizing the realities of history, totalitarian errors, and systemic contradictions as one ages, is a critique of lacking a sense of reality (lacking a head).
