Yoon Suk-yeol: "I believed the Democratic Party was connected to North Korea"
During the courtroom proceedings for the insurrection case, Mr. Yoon Suk-yeol stated, "I believed North Korea was connected to the Democratic Party." When he declared emergency martial law on the night of December 3, 2024, he cited justifications such as "eradicating pro-North Korean anti-state forces," and his perception remains largely unchanged from that time.
On the morning of the 22nd, during the appellate trial for the case involving the leader of the insurrection, the Criminal Division 12-1 (Presiding Judge Lee Seung-cheol) of the Seoul High Court's specialized insurrection tribunal conducted a defendant examination of Mr. Yoon Suk-yeol by his defense counsel.
Attorney Kim Gye-ri, representing Mr. Yoon, took the stand for the examination. Attorney Kim displayed a <<Chosun Ilbo> article dated October 16, 2021, on the screen. The article dealt with a spy ring case, titled "[Exclusive] Chungbuk Chapter: 'North Korea, please help so that people can rally around Lee Jae-myung.'" When Attorney Kim asked if he had seen such content, Mr. Yoon replied, "It was during the presidential election, and I remember sharing discussions with party officials saying, 'The situation is quite extraordinary.'"
