Am I making a mistake by paying when eating with much older seniors?

I eat and drink with seniors who are 15 to 20 years older than me about 2 or 3 times a week after working out.
Since they are always treating me, I tried to pay for the meal in advance this time,
but they canceled the payment and gave me a lecture, telling me not to do that again...
Did I overstep my bounds??
