Molar inlay/crown help T_T

About 10 years ago, I got a gold inlay due to a cavity in my molar.
Every time I visit the dentist, they diagnose that the surrounding area is weak and has broken.
Even looking in the mirror, the condition of the tooth is practically on its deathbed.
The middle part is hollowed out, so it looks different.
Since two days ago, I've been feeling the broken part of the tooth touching my tongue,
which is causing inflammation on my tongue.
I went in for a diagnosis today, and they recommended a crown T_T
They also suggested a root canal.
When I asked if I really had to do it since it doesn't hurt or feel sensitive,
they said they would grind it down as little as possible before doing the crown. Is this a good approach?
