The Death of Venerable Beopjeong

I understand that Venerable Beopjeong often said that death is always a new beginning,
and that one must be able to accept death like a friend.
It seems that in his later years, he underwent treatment for lung cancer in the United States, including surgery and chemotherapy.
What puzzles me is that for someone who had attained transcendence over life and death,
I, in my foolishness, cannot understand why he would go all the way to the United States in his seventies to undergo surgery and chemotherapy.
I have always truly loved Buddhism; in my 20s, I read Choi In-ho's "The Roadless Road" (or was it "The Pathless Way"?...) and loved it so much that
I have held a deep affection and fondness for Buddhism itself. I felt a bit disappointed after learning this fact late in the game.
I am not sure how to process this.
I am not suggesting that death should be forced upon anyone,
but it seems he had not reached the same spiritual heights as the figures I have seen in history, such as Master Seosan - Master Samyeong - Mangong - Gyeongheo - and Manhae Han Yong-un.
