Dropping nuclear bombs on Manchuria during the Korean War wouldn't have changed the tide of the war
MacArthur's claim that "If they had listened to me and dropped nukes on Manchuria, we would have won, but Truman ignored me and that's why we were pushed back" was literally just lip service. There's a reason he was criticized in the US as a political soldier.
I understand that Truman's decision not to opt for a nuclear strike wasn't solely because of the Soviet Union.
The source for the information I am sharing is a book called "The Coldest Winter."
It is a book written by David Halberstam, an American journalist who won a Pulitzer Prize for his coverage of the Vietnam War, based on his lifelong reporting.
I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the Korean War.
Anyway,
It is said that Truman did proactively consider a nuclear strike on China.
However, he scrapped the idea because he judged that the actual benefits would be difficult to achieve.
First, it wasn't as if the Chinese People's Volunteer Army was moving in massive, concentrated clusters across the vast Manchurian plains... they said there weren't suitable targets in Manchuria to drop nukes on.
(In particular, at that time, the Chinese forces were specialized in moving stealthily to avoid US aerial reconnaissance. That is why by the time the UN forces passed the Chongchon River and Pyongyang and reached the Yalu River, the Chinese forces had already infiltrated deep into the Korean Peninsula.)
Wiping out the Chinese forces by dropping nukes was a difficult task...
Second, when they ran simulations on how many nuclear bombs would be needed to drop on major cities to break China's will to fight... the results showed that hundreds would be required, and the nuclear arsenal the US possessed at the time was nowhere near enough.
Third, just as it is now, the US judged that it would be difficult to handle the aftermath of dropping hundreds of nuclear bombs on major Chinese cities where civilians also live.
If global public opinion turned negative due to the killing of civilians, there was a possibility that the countries belonging to the UN forces would turn their backs on the intervention.
For these and various other reasons, Truman reportedly reviewed the nuclear strike option but ultimately abandoned it.
Well... even thinking logically...
It doesn't seem like dropping a few nukes on Manchuria would have dealt a devastating blow to the Chinese forces...
Also, considering the Chinese Communist leadership viewed the value of human life like insects, even if they were hit by a few nukes and hundreds of thousands of civilians died, they likely wouldn't have withdrawn their troops. If anything, they probably would have used it effectively as propaganda material.
