Seoul Central Investigation Agency assigns Park Sun-won's "Whistleblower Identity Disclosure" case to Anti-Corruption Bureau
The case involving Rep. Park Sun-won of the Democratic Party, who was sued by a whistleblower (identified as Mr. Cho) for allegedly disclosing his identity, has been assigned to the Anti-Corruption Investigation Bureau of the Seoul Central Investigation Agency. Mr. Cho was the original whistleblower who raised allegations regarding "lobbying for clinical trial approvals at the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS)."
According to legal circles on the 15th, the agency decided to assign the case involving Rep. Park and others, who were sued for violations of the Protection of Public Interest Whistleblowers Act, in this manner yesterday.
On the 6th, Mr. Cho filed a complaint with the agency against Rep. Park, journalists, YouTubers, and 13 others. In the complaint, Mr. Cho urged an investigation, stating, "A sitting member of the National Assembly disclosed the identity of a public interest whistleblower who reported corruption and testified in court via a live broadcast, and the media and YouTube spread it nationwide within six days."
Rep. Park disclosed Mr. Cho's identity during a Democratic Party Supreme Council meeting on the 11th of last month. He stated, "He is a co-representative of a company that entered into a management consulting contract with CEO Yang Su-jin (a broker) in 2021 and was operating a subsidiary under University A," adding, "I suspect that Mr. Cho, having failed to recover the funds he wanted, reported this after establishing ties with the People Power Party."
Mr. Cho stated that he had reported Rep. Park and Democratic Party leader Kim Min-seok to the Anti-Corruption and Civil Rights Commission for violating the Protection of Public Interest Whistleblowers Act, but filed the complaint with the agency after the Commission's processing was delayed. He emphasized, "Given that a member of the National Assembly, who makes the laws, personally engaged in the identity disclosure prohibited by the Whistleblower Protection Act, the illegality and social impact are incomparably more serious than in the case of an ordinary citizen. I urge a thorough investigation into the transmission routes of non-disclosed investigative information and materials and demand strict punishment."
