Japan's shrine visiting culture is quite fascinating

I wonder if it should be viewed as superstition, but seeing people of all ages, genders, and professions regularly pressing their hands together in prayer at small local shrines is both fascinating and somewhat uncanny.
Rather than feeling strictly religious, it feels more like it has permeated their daily lives.
It almost feels like a different version of Islam.
I wonder what exactly they believe in so deeply.
