Driving while maintaining a safe following distance

Hello.
When I drive, my personality is more like an "old man's driving style," so I tend to keep a significant distance from the car in front.
I usually leave about 2 to 3 dashed lines of space. Even with that distance, I tend to accelerate slowly because I worry about the car ahead braking suddenly.
Because of this, I often get scolded by people in the lane next to me to "get closer to the car in front" due to vehicles trying to merge in.
Do you think I should change my driving habits?
