June 27, 2000, 10:47 AM. A location 5km southeast of Panmunjom in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ), Gunnae-myeon, Paju-si, Gyeonggi-do. Lieutenant Colonel Lee Jong-myeong (43, 39th class of Korea Military Academy), the former battalion commander of an Army forward unit's search team, along with the new battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Seol Dong-seop (41, 40th class of KMA), 3rd Company Commander Captain Park Young-hoon (29, 52nd class of KMA), and 17 soldiers, were conducting a search operation around the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) for two hours, wearing combat uniforms soaked in sweat.
(Omitted)
Suddenly, a loud "bang" echoed. "Lt. Col. Seol is injured. I know the terrain well, so I will go in. You all stay back!" Lt. Col. Lee shouted urgently. Lt. Col. Seol and Captain Park, who were walking ahead, had stepped on an anti-personnel mine and were lying on the ground bleeding profusely. To ensure the safety of his subordinates following behind, he first blocked their approach. Then, he entered the accident site alone. A moment later, another thunderous explosion rang out.
He [Lt. Col. Lee Jong-myeong] crawled out about 10 meters with both ankles amputated, his body covered in blood, clutching his rifle and helmet.

Lt. Col. Seol Dong-seop was unable to do even that due to his head injury and was forced to discharge.
