Why are there so many Man Utd fans?

Is it because they were so strong during the Ferguson era? Or is it marketing? Park Ji-sung?
There was even a time when all the Champions League semi-finalists were from the EPL, right?
That seems to have been their golden age..
I wonder if Man Utd needs to go through a period of hardship like Arsenal did before they can win again.
