What is a shipping mark and why does it matter for an L/C?

Shipping marks are the identifying markings printed on the outside of packages. If a letter of credit specifies particular marks, they must appear consistently on the packing list, invoice and transport document. Inconsistent or missing marks are a routine and entirely avoidable discrepancy.
