What is the role of a purchase order in international trade?

A purchase order is the buyer's formal instruction to supply specific goods on stated terms. When the seller accepts it, the PO and the acceptance together can form a binding contract. In practice many trades run on a PO alone, which is risky because a PO rarely covers dispute resolution, governing law or remedies.
