Jung Chan-gyu (49), a Chinese-language tour interpreter with seven years of experience, could not believe his ears when he recently saw a foreign guide raising their voice to visitors at Gyeongbokgung Palace in Jongno-gu, Seoul. This was because the guide claimed that the kings of Joseon could not do anything without the permission of the Chinese Emperor, followed by the explanation that "King Sejong created Hangeul by mimicking the shapes of Chinese characters." Jung stated, "Unverified individuals are delivering incorrect history and culture to foreign tourists," adding, "It is concerning to see this happening at one of the country's representative tourist attractions."
