Female employees dance on stage for money... Two illegal maid cafes in Hongdae booked
Maid cafes that have caused controversy due to illegal service activities in the Hongdae area of Mapo-gu, Seoul, have been caught by the police.
On the 10th, the Seoul Mapo Police Station announced that they conducted intensive crackdowns on maid cafes within their jurisdiction from the 12th of last month to the 7th of this month, booking two establishments for violating business operator compliance requirements under the Food Sanitation Act.
Currently, 29 maid cafes are operating in Mapo-gu, and most are registered as general restaurants.
After collecting prior intelligence, the police selected 19 locations deemed to have a high risk of illegal operations and conducted on-site inspections. A joint inspection team was formed, including officers from Mapo, Geumcheon, Yeongdeungpo, and Guro police stations.
As a result of the crackdown, it was investigated that two establishments operated by having maids (female employees) dance to music on a stage installed within the premises when customers ordered a paid menu item called a "Live Show."
In general restaurants, service activities that promote entertainment, such as employees sitting with customers to drink alcohol, dancing, or singing together, are prohibited.
