What is a proforma invoice and when is it used?

A proforma invoice is a preliminary invoice issued before the sale is confirmed. It sets out the goods, quantity, price, trade term and payment terms so the buyer can arrange an order, apply for a letter of credit or obtain an import permit. It is not a demand for payment and does not record a completed sale.
